Aqueducts made Rome possible. Canals shaped Venice. Railways transformed London. Highways accelerated the growth of modern metropolises. Infrastructure has long been understood as the physical framework that enables urban life to function. It carries water, energy, goods, information, and people. It is the human-centered architecture of civilization. Yet today, many cities face a paradox. While infrastructure networks continue to expand, public space does not. Rapid urbanization, rising land values, and environmental pressures have left many cities with fewer opportunities for collective gathering, civic interaction, and meaningful encounters with nature. Public space is often treated as a luxury, while infrastructure is considered a necessity. One receives cultural attention; the other is viewed primarily as an engineering concern. But what if this distinction no longer makes sense? What if infrastructure itself could become public space? This question is particularly relevant in Thailand and across Asia, where high urban density, climate change, and limited land resources demand new forms of urban thinking. In many cities, the largest and most continuous public territories are no longer parks or plazas. They are bridges, transportation corridors, flood-control systems, waterfronts, utility networks, and the residual spaces created by infrastructure. Rather than building more architecture within the city, perhaps we should begin by reimagining the city that already exists. When infrastructure becomes more than infrastructure, it can serve as transportation and even as a space for public engagement. Infrastructure possesses a second life beyond its technical function. It contains spatial, environmental, and social potential that often remains invisible. The challenge is not to replace infrastructure, but to reveal the possibilities already embedded within it. This perspective emerges from Bangkok itself. Historically, Bangkok developed through water. The city was organized around canals that simultaneously functioned as transportation networks, commercial corridors, ecological systems, and public spaces. Water infrastructure was never separated from daily life. The canal was both marketplace and public space, both a mobility system and social infrastructure. Flexible, standardized, and multifunctional infrastructure can create more meaningful spaces for people and society. Image © Jenchieh Hung + Kulthida Songkittipakdee / HAS design and research One compelling urban study in Greater Bangkok is the research project Big C Boat Bridge, documented by architects Professor Jenchieh Hung and Professor Kulthida Songkittipakdee. The project transformed two modified wooden rowing boats into a hybrid infrastructure that functions as both a boat and a bridge, connecting a local canal community with the nearby Big C supermarket. The research asks a simple yet fundamental question: Can infrastructure become more than infrastructure? The project is more than a transportation device and more than a bridge. It demonstrates how infrastructure can be fully integrated into everyday life by responding to local environmental conditions while creating meaningful public encounters. The project stands out through its innovative use of locally sourced materials, its adaptability to canal communities, and its ability to strengthen social interaction. In Bangkok, and throughout Thailand, where the rhythms of daily life continue to flow along the waterways, it illustrates how infrastructure can become a meaningful public space while preserving the spirit of waterborne living. Transforming infrastructure into public engagement space, this project reimagines how millions of utility poles across Thailand can become catalysts for social interaction and urban life. Photo © DOF Sky|Ground A similar approach guided another design project by architects Professor Jenchieh Hung and Professor Kulthida Songkittipakdee: High Line Bangkok. The project emerged from a simple question: Can existing urban infrastructure create meaningful public space? More specifically, could Thailand's millions of utility poles become part of everyday public life instead of merely contributing to visual clutter? The design of High Line Bangkok uses the existing utility poles as its primary structure and introduces a lightweight intervention composed of recyclable Thai fabric elements that transform both environmental conditions and public perception. Shade, ventilation, thermal comfort, visual identity, opportunities for social interaction, and generous public gathering spaces are created through minimal material intervention. The project demonstrates that transforming infrastructure into meaningful public space does not necessarily require excessive budgets or extensive new construction. Sometimes, the most sustainable architecture is not about building something new, but about revealing new possibilities within what already exists. This transformation of infrastructure reflects a broader shift in architectural thinking. For decades, architecture and infrastructure have largely been treated as separate disciplines. Yet the environmental realities of the twenty-first century suggest that the future of public space may depend less on producing new forms and more on transforming the infrastructure that already exists within our cities. The project not only transforms infrastructure into public space, but also makes the city warmer, more welcoming, and more engaging for everyday life. Future design must be adaptive, resilient, and multifunctional. It should respond to environmental challenges, reduce ecological impact, support biodiversity, encourage social interaction, and strengthen civic life. Infrastructure should no longer be understood as merely a technical system that supports the city; it should become an active participant in urban life. Ultimately, the question is not whether infrastructure can become public space. The question is whether architects, planners, and citizens are prepared to recognize the public potential that infrastructure has always contained. If we begin to see infrastructure not only as engineering but also as architecture, landscape, and civic space, then its second life may become one of the most important urban opportunities of the twenty-first century.
