Leadership in Facility Management today is much more than ensuring the efficient operation of buildings and services. It involves anticipating change, making strategic decisions, coordinating multidisciplinary teams, and striking a balance between people, environments, technology, processes, and sustainability.

In a landscape shaped by artificial intelligence, automation, and the transformation of how we work, leadership in Facility Management faces new challenges and opportunities. Which decisions can be supported by technology? How can data be turned into concrete actions? How can we balance operational efficiency, sustainability, well-being, and user experience? And what skills will be essential to lead the sector in the future?

Drawing on diverse perspectives and professional experiences, this roundtable discussion offers a reflection on the various dimensions of leadership in Facility Management. From strategy to the workplace experience, including the day-to-day management of services and the technical and scientific knowledge associated with the building lifecycle, the conversation will explore different ways to address the challenges of a sector in transformation.

Our speakers:

  • Cátia Soares

Commercial Director at CBRE GWS Portugal with over 20 years of experience in facilities management. With a bachelor’s degree in International Relations and a master’s degree in Marketing, she embraced the world of FM with the enthusiasm and joy that define her.

  • María Rosa Abeijón Giráldez

Real Estate Workplace Design & User Experience Lead at Nokia, with solid international experience in Corporate Real Estate, Workplace, and Facility Management. An architect by training, she has focused her career on transforming work environments by integrating architecture, technology, organizational culture, and the user experience.

  • Inês Flores-Colen

Full Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture, and Environment at the Instituto Superior Técnico and a researcher at CERIS, with over 25 years of experience in the fields of building construction and rehabilitation. A civil engineer with a Ph.D. in the same field, she bridges the gap between research and practice, with a special focus on durability, building pathology, inspection, maintenance, and sustainability of the built environment.

More than just ensuring that spaces function properly, Facility Management plays an increasingly strategic role in organizations, helping to bring together architecture, technology, innovation, sustainability, and, above all, people.

An opportunity to reflect on the present and future of leadership in FM and on the sector’s ability to transform the environments where we work and live.

Roundtable discussion organized by the Women in Facility Management group in Portugal.
