Following the success of ARCADE’s first Barcelona chapter, The Souvenir City, last May, we present a new ARCADE session: City and Countryside, taking place on 20 October at 7:00 pm as part of the Barcelona Design Week programme
ARCADE is an academic project created in collaboration with the architecture studio Arquid. Conceived as a space for reflection on architectural practice from a multidisciplinary and cross-scale perspective, it unfolds through different seasons and themes, addressing contemporary challenges through game-inspired dynamics.
On this episode we will discuss about the opposition between countryside and city and how it is no longer enough to understand the territory. We live in an uneven continuum: major cities concentrate population, investment, resource consumption and the capacity to shape discourse, while other territories sustain a large part of their material, productive and environmental cycles. Less subject to the pressure of major urban centres, these spaces can become places for experimentation: territories in which to prototype new ways of living, producing, caring, managing resources and relating to the environment.
Speakers:
Sergio del Molino: writer and essayist, author of Empty Spain and Against Empty Spain, key works for understanding territory, depopulation and the contemporary idea of the country.
Vanesa Freixa: writer and rural activist whose work explores the relationship between territory, rural life and contemporary ways of inhabiting.
Eduard Callís from Un Parell d'Arquitectes a studio from Olot, that fuses diverse scales and encourages exchanges between infrastructure and décor, residential sphere and public space.
